What should you actually do?

How this works

The tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and there’s no email form at the end. Your answers disappear the moment you close the tab.

The recommendations follow a few firm rules. Hard blockers override preferences — if you need software that genuinely doesn’t exist on another platform, we’ll tell you to stay on Windows even if you’d prefer otherwise, because that’s the true answer. And the free option is always mentioned first where it applies.

Whatever the tool says, do this today

If you haven’t enrolled in ESU, your Windows 10 PC is receiving no security patches right now. Enrolling is free for most people and takes about five minutes. It’s worth doing before you decide anything else — it costs nothing and removes the time pressure entirely. Here’s how.

The questions, and why we ask them

QuestionWhy it matters
Windows 11 eligibilityIf your PC is eligible, the free upgrade is usually the simplest path. If it isn’t, that’s what opens up the other options.
Software you rely onThe single biggest determinant. Macro-heavy Excel, Adobe, QuickBooks Desktop, Access and industry software are genuine blockers, not inconveniences.
GamingCompetitive multiplayer with kernel-level anti-cheat cannot work on Mac or Linux by any route. Single-player is a completely different picture.
BudgetThere is a genuinely free path. We won’t recommend spending unless there’s a reason.
Appetite for changeChanges the answer more than anything else. Wanting things to stay familiar is a legitimate requirement, not a failing.
