Linux Wi-Fi not working? The USB adapters that just work

Wi-Fi is the most common Linux install-day failure, and the fix is a cheap USB adapter, as long as it has the right chip inside. Here's how to tell, and which ones to buy.

  • If Linux shows no Wi-Fi networks, the built-in card (usually Broadcom, sometimes older Realtek) needs a driver you can't download without internet.
  • A USB adapter whose chip is supported by the Linux kernel itself works the moment you plug it in. MediaTek MT7612U and MT7921AU, Atheros AR9271 and Ralink RT5572 all qualify.
  • Avoid adapters built on Realtek RTL8812AU, RTL8811AU or RTL8821AU. They need a third-party driver that breaks with kernel updates.
  • Adapters are sold by marketing name, not chip. Buy one of the specific models below.

You booted Linux from a USB stick, clicked the network icon, and nothing appeared. This is the single most common way a Linux switch stalls, and it has a cheap, permanent fix. The trick is knowing what's inside the adapter you buy, because the box won't tell you.

Why Wi-Fi breaks, and why a USB adapter fixes it

Most Wi-Fi chips are supported by drivers built into the Linux kernel, so they work on every distribution with no setup. A few aren't. Broadcom chips, common in HP, Dell and older Lenovo laptops, need a proprietary driver that Mint's Driver Manager can install, but only if the machine already has an internet connection or you plug the install stick back in. Some older Realtek chips have quirks. Either way, you're stuck at the exact moment you need the internet to fix the internet.

A USB adapter with a kernel-supported chip sidesteps all of it. Plug it in, and the network icon lists your Wi-Fi. No driver, no terminal, and it keeps working through every update because the driver ships with the kernel.

Boxes say "AC1200" and "Linux compatible," not which chip is inside, and cheap adapters change chips between production runs without changing the name. These specific models are known quantities.

One more worth knowing about: BrosTrend sells adapters explicitly labeled for Linux, including a Wi-Fi 6 model. They work, but BrosTrend supports them with its own installer script, which needs an internet connection to run. That makes them a fine second adapter and a poor first one.

Two to avoid

  • Anything that lists RTL8812AU or RTL8811AU in the fine print, or that says "Linux driver available for download." A downloadable driver is exactly the problem you're trying to escape.
  • TP-Link's Archer TX20U Plus gets recommended in forums, but TP-Link's own product page lists Windows only. Skip it.

Meanwhile: a cable

If your router is within reach, an ethernet cable solves install day on its own. Mint will fetch the Broadcom driver through the cable, and after that the built-in Wi-Fi works. A long cable is worth owning anyway; it's also the right way to connect a home server.

Can you fix the internal card instead?

Often, yes. On Mint, once you're online by any means, open Driver Manager; if it offers a Broadcom driver, install it and restart. If you'd rather not run a proprietary driver at all, some laptops accept a replacement internal Intel Wi-Fi card for very little money, though this involves opening the machine and a few laptops refuse cards that weren't on the maker's list. For most people, the USB adapter is the ten-second answer, and it moves to the next machine when this one retires.
