Privacy policy

This site is plain HTML on a static host. There is no analytics, no tracking pixel, no advertising network and no account to create. This policy is short because there is very little to disclose.

The short version

We collect no personal data about visitors. The three checkers run inside your browser and send your answers nowhere. The site sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. If you choose to join the update list, your email goes to our newsletter provider and is used for nothing but the notices described below. Product links are affiliate links, which set cookies on the retailer's site after you click, never on ours.

What we collect about visitors

Nothing. No analytics or measurement service of any kind runs on this site: no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no advertising pixels, no session recording, no heatmaps. We do not build profiles or fingerprint browsers, and we have no way to tell one visitor from another.

There are no third-party fonts, scripts or embeds. Typefaces are self-hosted on our own domain. Every page loads only files served from perfectlygoodpc.com, including the small search index the site-search box uses.

Cookies and local storage

This site sets no cookies and uses no local storage. You can verify this in your browser's developer tools.

The checkers and tools

The path finder, the ESU eligibility checker and the Linux hardware checker ask you questions about your computer and your circumstances. Your answers never leave your browser. All three are JavaScript files that run on your device; the decision logic and every possible result are already in the page you downloaded. There is no server to send answers to. Nothing is saved between visits, and there is no email gate on any tool.

The update list

Some pages offer an optional email signup for one purpose: telling you if the Windows 10 dates move again, or if something in our guides stops being true. If you use it:

  • Your email address is submitted directly to Buttondown, our newsletter provider, which stores it and sends the messages on our behalf under the Buttondown privacy policy.
  • We ask for an email address and nothing else.
  • We use it only for date changes, guide corrections and new guides. No digests, no product promotions, nothing from anyone else.
  • We never sell, rent, share or trade the list.
  • Every email has a one-click unsubscribe. Ask us and we'll delete the record entirely.

If no signup form appears on a page, the list isn't running yet; the forms stay hidden until they're connected.

Affiliate links

Guides on this site link to products (SSDs, memory, USB sticks, Wi-Fi adapters, backup drives, remotes and similar) on Amazon. These are affiliate links, marked as paid links where they appear. If you buy after clicking one, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

What matters for your privacy is the handoff: clicking an affiliate link takes you to the retailer, and the retailer sets its own cookies to attribute the sale. That is their tracking, on their site, under their privacy policy. We receive only aggregate commission reports: how many items sold and the fee earned. Retailers never tell us who you are, and we have no way to connect a purchase to a visitor.

We run no display advertising. Recommendations are based on the research behind the guides, not on commission rates, which is why our advice is often to buy nothing.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like every web host, Cloudflare processes the technical information needed to deliver a page (IP address, browser user-agent, the file requested) and uses it for security and abuse prevention, under the Cloudflare privacy policy. We see aggregate visitor counts, not visitor-level logs.

Children

This site is written for adults deciding what to do with their computers. It is not directed at children, and we knowingly collect no information from anyone, of any age.

Your rights

If you are in the UK, EEA, California, or anywhere with similar law, you have rights to access, correct, delete or port your personal data, and to object to its processing. For visitors who never join the update list, we hold no personal data about you at all. If you are on the list, your email address is the only personal data we hold; write to us and we'll show you what's there or delete it, promptly and without asking why. Since we run no advertising trackers and share nothing with advertisers, there is no sale or sharing of personal information to opt out of under the CCPA/CPRA.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, if we ever add analytics, advertising or any new way of collecting data, we'll update this page and change the date at the top before it takes effect, and say so on the update list.
